A special CBI court on Tuesday summoned the country's leading aluminium producer Hindalco and two of its executives in connection with a coal scandal being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The trio were summoned to appear before the court on May 6. "Prosecution has made out a prima facie case for summoning the accused for facing the trial for aforesaid offences," the court said in its order.
The order was passed after the counsel for CBI urged the court to take cognisance of its charges against Hindalco and two of its executives. The federal agency alleged that the accused have committed offences of cheating, criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.
The alleged offence dates back to the year 2013-2014. The CBI had registered a case on November 22, 2015. After years of investigation the agency filed its final report in the case last year and alleged that the company resorted to illegal mining contrary to the approved mining plan during 2004 to 2005 and 2011.
It is alleged by the agency that the company extracted 4.8 million tonne of coal contrary to the approved mining plan.
"CBI is proposing prosecution of the accused for commission of offences punishable u/s 120B r/w 420 and 409 of IPC and substantive offences thereof," the order read. The Ahlmad (court official) informed the court that "the scrutiny of documents filed with the chargesheet is complete and they are found to be in order".
