In a major boost for connectivity in the Northeast, the central government has approved a key road upgrade project to improve travel between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The project involves upgrading a section of National Highway 115 (NH-115) from a standard two-lane road to a two-lane road with paved shoulders. This vital stretch runs from Islampur, close to the Dhola-Sadiya bridge, to the Border Outpost at Shantipur in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
The project, aimed at enhancing regional infrastructure, is expected to be completed by the financial year 2025-26. Once finished, the upgraded road will support better movement of both people and goods, making travel faster and safer.
Budget and timeline
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has allocated ₹50.43 crore for this initiative. This funding covers construction costs, agency charges, and other related expenses. The proposal for the project was submitted by the Chief Engineer (NH), PWD Assam, on February 5, 2025. Out of the total, ₹48.80 crore is earmarked for the financial year 2024-25, primarily for pre-construction activities.
The project will follow the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, guaranteeing superior quality and technical accuracy. Beyond merely resurfacing the road, the initiative aims to deliver a safer, more efficient corridor aligned with contemporary transportation requirements.
Phased Planning
A well-thought-out financial plan ensures that the road will not only be built to high standards but also maintained properly. Of the total budget, ₹1.17 crore has been set aside for road upkeep between 2026 and 2029. This phased approach highlights the government’s commitment to long-term infrastructure sustainability.
