Mumbai: In a disturbing incident that unfolded in Gorai-2, Borivali (West) on Wednesday, three men — including two with serious criminal backgrounds under the MCOCA Act — allegedly launched a deadly assault on a 53-year-old vegetable vendor over a stall dispute, spreading panic in the area. One accused has been arrested, while police have launched a manhunt for the remaining two.
Two Accused Linked to Serious Crimes
According to Borivali police, the victim, Victor Joseph Ferreira, who has been selling vegetables in the area for the past four years with his wife Rachel, was brutally attacked by Rohan Gorakh Chavan, Sagar Shiva Meeni Patil, and Akshay Shiva Meeni Patil.
Chavan has been taken into custody, while efforts are on to trace Sagar and Akshay — brothers with multiple serious charges across various Mumbai police stations, including extortion, attempted murder, rioting, molestation, and externment violations.
Victim Beaten With Iron Object and Crates
Police said the dispute began when Chavan, carrying flower garlands, asked Ferreira to vacate his spot so he could sell flowers there. After Ferreira refused, Chavan returned with Sagar, Akshay, and another unidentified man.
The group hurled abuses, threw vegetable crates, and violently attacked Ferreira. Sagar allegedly struck Ferreira on the shoulder with a heavy iron object, Akshay hit him on the head and back with a plastic crate, and Chavan kicked and punched him in the stomach.
One Held, Manhunt For Two Brothers
The assault left Ferreira bleeding from the ears and severely injured. The attackers created such panic that nearby vendors and customers fled the scene. By the time police arrived, the attackers had fled, except for Chavan who was apprehended.
