Trump Slaps Up To 245% Tariffs On China, Beijing Pushes Back Cautiously

A new fact sheet from the White House shows that China now faces import tariffs of up to 245 per cent. The increase was made quietly, without a big announcement from Trump.

How Did It Reach 245 per cent?

The 245 per cent is not a flat rate for all Chinese goods. It’s a combined total of several older and new duties.

For example, Chinese syringes already had a 100 per cent duty from Biden’s time.

Trump has now added:

- 20 per cent fentanyl-related tariff

- 125 per cent reciprocal tariff

This brings the total to 245 per cent for some items.

Other Examples

- Woollen sweaters now face a 168.5 per cent duty.

- 16 per cent base tariff

- 7.5 per cent extra under Biden

- 20 per cent fentanyl tariff

- 125 per cent reciprocal tariff

These add up to 168.5 per cent.

No Tariffs on Tech

Smartphones and computers are not affected.

China Reacts

China’s reply was measured. A foreign ministry spokesperson said, You can ask the US side for the specific tax rate. He also said, China does not want a trade war, but is not afraid of one.

Slowed imports of beef, poultry, and gas
