Poetry is more than mere words. They are pieces that weigh the truth from the depths of our hearts, reflect our understanding about the world and connect us with one another.
We’ve all been moved by a stranger’s written lines, often wished we could write something as heart-wrenching or funny as that or even received some guidance on how to do so.
If you're on the cusp of your poetry journey or looking for a creative space to explore your voice, The Poetry Retreat happening in Goa might be just what you need. Taking place from June 4 to 9, this unique residency is designed to support you in finding your voice and refining your work.
The Poetry Retreat was founded by Rochelle D’Silva, a Spoken Word Poet now based in Goa, who has been writing since the age of six and performing on stage since 2011.
The idea took shape over a few years when Rochelle felt that despite the presence of many talented poets in India, there were very few platforms focused on learning and mentorship in poetry.
“Many treat poetry like a hobby, something they had to study in school, but never understood. At the same time, we have a lot of people who do write poetry, who respond to it in emotional lengths, but don’t have the direction,” says Rochelle.
What makes a good poem? How do I improve this piece? Is this complete? How do I edit it? These are questions aspiring poets often with and this realisation led to the creation of The Poetry Retreat, a space where poets can learn about poetry from every possible lens.
Each year the retreat brings in a different set of mentors to offer something fresh, consistent and meaningful.
This year, the team of facilitators include Vinita Agrawal, a published poet with six poetry books and numerous awards, who will guide participants in editing, building a manuscript and writing poetry for publication.
Rochelle, who will take the lead with the session on the spoken word, will help poets write and edit for the stage, and become the poem itself.
Shaun Williams, a theatre practitioner, will lead bodywork and voice training sessions to help poets connect with their breath and movement, engage more deeply with the text, and evoke emotion.
“The USP of this retreat is the group of people who attend it, what they want to achieve,” Rochelle says adding that the activities and exercises are all tailored to each person’s.
“So, it’s very unique in that way; you can attend the residency twice and not have the same experience,” she says.
The retreat runs for six days (five nights) with sessions from 7.30 am to 8.30 pm, with a mix of writing, movement workshops and one-on-one feedback. The best part is that no prior experience is required to be part of it. Whether you're just curious or already an avid writer, this residency program is accessible.
“My wish is that whoever attends the residency starts to feel more confident in their own stories and their own voice because a huge part of being is giving yourself permission and trusting in your ability to create,” shares Rochelle.
To apply, you simply have to fill out the registration form and share a few writing samples.

The venue includes writing spaces, a performance area and access to a pool and beach.
“We walk to the beach, go on , and do all of these little things. There’s also home cooked food which caters to dietary needs,” she adds.
More than just a workshop, the Poetry Retreat is a space for community, creativity and growth.
“It’s one of those experiences that lets you grow as a person. And the fact that it is happening in makes it all the more special. Being a Goan, this is my way of giving back to the place I belong to, and also invite poets to show them a different side of Goa,” concludes Rochelle.
