The Girlfriend author teases 'extra twists' to original novel as riveting thriller hits screens

Writer Michelle Frances has disclosed just how extensively her debut thriller novel The Girlfriend has been transformed for its television adaptation, which launches this week.

First released in 2017, this glamorous and twist-laden drama is now arriving on Prime Video as a gripping six-episode streaming spectacular.

Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Hollywood legend Robin Wright and House of the Dragon's Olivia Cooke, this scandalous tale of two warring women is absolutely unmissable.

Wright, who also helms the series, portrays powerful gallery owner and mum Laura, who grows wary when her son Daniel (portrayed by Laurie Davidson) introduces his working-class partner Cherry Laine (Cooke).

Following a string of misunderstandings they're quickly at loggerheads, but the series raises the question: who was genuinely at fault?, reports the Express.

Prior to the series' streaming debut this Wednesday (10th September), writer Frances teased this compulsively captivating adaptation at the programme's London premiere.

"From a technical viewpoint, one of the things which was utterly gobsmacking was how [Wright] would act in a scene, cut, then switch to director and know what needs to be done, then she'll go straight back into acting again," she recalled.

"She's looking into everyone's performance and assessing her own. It was jaw-dropping."

Frances disclosed she managed to visit the set "a few times" and was extensively involved in the scriptwriting process.

She even managed to sneak into the background as an extra for some scenes, though warned fans who might be looking out for cameos that she is "very blurred".

Discussing the narrative itself, Frances addressed whether there are any major changes to the original book that might keep readers on their toes.

"There are some extra twists and things like that," she disclosed. "When you develop a book for the screen, particularly as it's six episodes, you have to invent a little more story or you have to add twists.

"But the characters are so true to the book, and as is the tone of the story and the dual perspective. So, it was a joy."

With Wright driving the project both in front of and behind the camera, the series is meticulously crafted to showcase the two very different perspectives on this gripping feud.
