Mohammed Shami has been away from international cricket for a long time. He last played for India in the Champions Trophy 2025. Since then, fitness issues have prevented him from returning to the national team.
Shami broke his silence
Shami said on his YouTube channel, "There are many rumours and memes floating around about my non-selection in the team. It's not in my hands to be selected in the team. It's entirely the decision of the selection committee, the coach and the captain. If they feel I should be in the team, I'm ready, and if they feel I need some more time, I respect that decision as well. Whenever I get a chance, I'll be fully prepared to play on the field."
What did shami say
Shami stated that many questions had been raised about his fitness. He also said that the selectors did not include him in the team because he had not played much domestic cricket recently. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also cited the same reason, saying that domestic performance was given priority in selection. Regarding his fitness, Shami said that he feels completely fit and is bowling at the same pace as before.
I am completely fit
Shami further said, "My fitness is absolutely fine and I am constantly trying to improve. When you are away from the field for some time, it is very important to keep yourself motivated. I recently played in the Duleep Trophy, where I felt very comfortable. I was in good rhythm and bowled around 35 overs. I am not facing any fitness issues."
Bengal's upcoming Ranji Trophy campaign marks the return of Mohammed Shami to red-ball cricket. Shami will lead the team's attack as the main bowler in the tournament, alongside Ishan Porel and Akash Deep.
