Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing criticism for heaping praise on US President Donald Trump during their bilateral meeting on Tuesday.
The two leaders convened on Tuesday to discuss trade tariffs amongst other matters, including Trump's persistent threats to annex its northern neighbour, forming the 51st state.
Canada remains the sole G7 nation that hasn't secured a trade agreement with the US this year as its steel sector continues to grapple with Trump's tariffs. The news emerges as Trump's 9-word response on Canada deal leaves Oval Office in stitches.
During the summer, Carney announced it would scrap its retaliatory tariffs against the US in a bid to extend an olive branch to Trump, who voiced his exasperation about the challenging circumstances during the meeting.
Whilst addressing the press from the Oval Office, Carney declared to Trump, "You are a transformative president.", reports the Express US.
A video of the exchange was shared on X by journalist Aaron Rupar, who commented on the interaction: "I regret to inform you that Mark Carney is kissing Trump's a--."
Carney's flattering comments were delivered at the beginning of Tuesday afternoon's meeting.
"Mr. President, if I may, you kindly hosted me and some of my colleagues a few months ago. I said, at the time, that you are a transformative leader," he stated.
The Canadian leader proceeded to commend Trump for revolutionising the economy, securing "unprecedented" commitments with NATO allies, facilitating ceasefire agreements between India-Pakistan and Azerbaijan-Armenia and dismantling what he characterised as Iranian terror. Many X users expressed their dissatisfaction with Carney's decision to praise Trump during the meeting.
"As a Canadian this is nauseating talk," one X user commented. "But as the saying goes, you have to butter up the turkey before you serve it.
"This is gross and sadly, it has to be done," another chimed in.
However, some X users suspect that the choice of words was intentionally misleading.
"Transformative doesn't only mean positive things. Personally think it's meant quite backhandedly," one X user suggested.
Another similarly added, "It was a backhanded compliment, not meant to be taken at face value.
"Well technically he's telling the truth, some transformations are bad," a third quipped.
A fourth remarked, "Transformative is the most neutral way to describe that man and still be pleasant."
