Fried eggs are a classic staple that many people would be able to cook in their sleep - but your next fry up could be markedly improved with one tiny tweak. Fried eggs are a frequent fixture on breakfast tables across the country, and are a quick option when you're getting ready to face the day.
But getting the whites fully cooked without the edges burning and with the yolk in the middle at just the right consistency can be tricky. A clever method could help, and no special ingredients are required.
Andrea Rivera Wawrzyn, Associate Food Editor at The Kitchn, tried various ways of cooking fried eggs and offered a key tip for getting perfectly runny yolks.
People often cook them with butter or oil, but Wawrzyn says avoiding both gave her the best result.
After heating up the pan, adding the egg, she simply adds a teaspoon of water before covering.
This creates the "perfect environment for gentle, even egg cooking", she wrote.
Wawrzyn recommends a non-stick pan for best results, and a clear lid to help you check on the progress of the egg.
Just make sure to use something to protect your hands when you take it off.
Recipe book author Dannii Martin and creator of the Hungry Healthy Happy food blog, says you don't even need a frying pan to get nicely cooked fried eggs.
She shared an approach that takes two minutes and always come out "perfect".
