It was a night to remember for Grimsby Town on Wednesday as they dumped Manchester United out of the League Cup. Ruben Amorim's side were outplayed, outclassed and outright embarrassed by a League Two outfit, who, simply put, looked like they wanted it more.
After the sunshine and roses of United's pre-season tour to the United States, a rain-soaked evening on the east coast of England saw the Red Devils come crashing back down to earth. Having trailed 2-0 for most of the match, a late flurry forced a penalty shootout, but misses from Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo proved costly as the Premier League outfit crashed out of the cup.
While the United fallout continues, there was one Grimsby player who raised eyebrows with his post-match comments, suggesting he was disappointed that Amorim's side had been knocked out. Christy Pym, who starred between the sticks for the Mariners, admitted after the shootout win he was 'half fuming' with the result.
Speaking with his tongue firmly in his cheek, Pym told Sky Sports: "Yeah, it hasn't really sunk in yet. I'm a United fan myself so I'm half fuming a little bit. But nights like this are what you play football for, so yeah, beautiful." There was a moment of pause from the Sky Sports reporter, who laughed and then asked: "Are you?"
On his performance in the shootout, where he saved just one of the 12 United spot-kicks, he added: "I should have done a little bit better, shouldn't I? Yesterday me and the goalkeeping coach Steve sat down for a good hour going through penalties, just in case. It kept changing, it was a bit frustrating, but I saved one, kept us in it, and then the boys did the rest. They were brilliant."
The jokey comment will come as little consolation to Ruben Amorim, who cut a frustrated figure at full-time. Reacting to ITV Sport, he said: "I am shocked because we are in the moment when we make a lot of changes.
"We try to fight a lot of things but then when we have these moments, we need to show up. If we don't show up, you can feel that something has to change and you are not going to change 22 players again."
It's a short turnaround for United, who face Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. Failure to beat the promoted outfit will mean United have gone four matches without a win to begin the campaign.
