PSG have rebuilt their squad and image in the wake of Mbappe's unceremonious exit less than 12 months ago. He joined after prolonged and sour negotiations, eventually leaving on a free transfer, with and also exiting the French capital in recent years.
But Enrique forged a more functional team without ego, spearheaded by Ousmane Dembele in the absence of those superstars, which took European football by storm and claimed a historic victory.
Tensions between Mbappe and PSG had been simmering before his exit, and it had been unclear how the winner felt about his former side's newfound success, as he is still in search of a first Champions League winners' medal himself.
But minutes after the final whistle blew, the Real Madrid star took to to send a classy message: "The big day has finally arrived, victory and in the style of an entire club, congratulations PSG."
Mbappe and PSG are still in court and locked in a protracted legal battle. The Frenchman is claiming £46.3million in unpaid wages and the sum, plus tax obligations, were frozen from the team's accounts by a Paris court following a request by Mbappe's legal team last month.
The dispute hinged on a contract extension in 2022, when Mbappe penned a two-year deal with the option of another season - a detail that would only emerge publicly later.
Mbappe released a letter claiming that he had no intention of triggering that option, but it was dated less than two months after his contract extension.
The Champions League winners claim that at the start of last season, Mbappe agreed to forgo a total of £46.3m in bonuses from the contract he signed the previous summer. It was allegedly reached in the form of a gentleman's agreement, which allowed him to return to the team after being banished to the reserves.
His legal team, however, assert that such an agreement is invalid as it was never signed - and claim that Mbappe is owed those bonuses. They make up the final third of his signing-on fee and three months' worth of wages which were unpaid.
Mbappe brought the case to the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), whose disciplinary commission initially issued a non-binding ruling that PSG were to pay the sum.
It was later deemed that the LFP do not have jurisdiction over the matter because of an ongoing civil court case. In February, the French Football Federation dismissed Mbappe's subsequent appeal on the same grounds.
But despite the ongoing drama between the two parties, Mbappe felt compelled to express his congratulations to PSG for their incredible victory.
