Liverpool release statement as former Reds women's manager dies at 47

Liverpool have been left 'deeply shocked and saddened' by the death of former Reds women's manager Matt Beard at the age of 47. He left Anfield earlier this year and was most recently in charge of the women's team at Burnley. Beard managed Liverpool over two spells, initially between 2012 and 2015 before returning for a second stint from 2021 to 2025.

He won successive Women's Super League titles during his first period in charge of the Reds. After returning to Anfield, he led them back into the top flight by winning the Women's Championship. Liverpool issued a statement on Saturday night in which they paid tribute to Beard, describing him as a 'person of real integrity and warmth'.

They said: "Liverpool Football Club is deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of former LFC Women manager Matt Beard. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Matt's family and friends at this devastating time.

"Matt was not only an extremely committed and successful manager, he was also a person of real integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness by everyone he worked with at the club."

Liverpool added that Beard made 'a significant contribution to the club's development and many memorable moments and achievements during his multiple tenures'.

His wife, Deb, wrote on social media: "It is with great sadness that our beautiful Matthew Beard has passed away tonight [Saturday] at 7:28pm.

"He is a loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle. He was the most amazing, caring man who was loved by anyone who had the pleasure to meet him.

"All of our family kindly ask for time to grieve in peace at his loss. We will love you forever, you absolute legend."

Beard also took charge of the women's team at West Ham United, taking them to the FA Cup final. He additionally managed the Bristol City women's side and had a brief spell in the Chelsea dugout.

Non-league outfit Eastbourne Borough said: "[We] would like to send our condolences to former boss Mark Beard following the passing of his brother, and former WSL manager, Matt Beard. We are sending Mark and his family all of our best wishes."

In a statement, the WSL said: "Everyone at WSL Football extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of Matt Beard following news of his passing.

"Matt played an instrumental role in the growth of women's football and will be missed by everyone associated with the game."
