Manchester United sit just a point above the Premier League relegation zone after Phil Foden and Erling Haaland inflicted a 3-0 derby day defeat on the Red Devils at the Etihad. United were in the game at half-time despite Foden heading in the opener for Manchester City. But the away side paid the price for moments of lapse defending and not being threatening enough at the other end.
Ruben Amorim's men have only won one of their first four league games this term and the loss to City leaves them 14th before facing an unbeaten Chelsea side at Old Trafford next weekend. Express Sport rates and slates the United players after a chastening afternoon...
Man Utd player ratings vs Man CityAltay Bayindir - 5
Had a moment of panic before recovering to deny Haaland but couldn't do much about Foden's header. Not big enough for Haaland's second.
Leny Yoro - 6
Did better than his team-mates against Jeremy Doku but a mix-up with Bayindir after Haaland hit the post almost allowed City to score. Came off at 2-0.
Matthijs de Ligt - 5
Allowed Haaland between himself and Shaw as City doubled their lead. Gave the ball away to Doku in a move where Haaland should've scored to make it 3-0, before he later actually did.
Luke Shaw - 3
Had a bit of a nightmare. Too easily beaten by Doku in the build-up to the opening goal and outmuscled by Haaland for the second goal. Important touch to stop Haaland going one-on-one in one moment but lost the ball for the third goal.
Noussair Mazrouai - 5
Solid enough defensively but didn't offer much offensively and not great for the second goal.

Manuel Ugarte - 6
An improved display but still took too long to play one first-half pass that would have released Mbeumo one-vs-one. Also too late to the ball shortly before Haaland's first goal.
Bruno Fernandes - 5
Could and should have been closer to Foden for the first goal. While City's big players stood up, Fernandes was a passenger by his standards.
Patrick Dorgu - 4
Too hesitant to cut out a long ball to Bernardo Silva in the move that led to the first goal and his end product was consistently lacking. Flashed a late shot over the bar and then headed wide, as if to underline that point.
Bryan Mbeumo - 7
United's most threatening player but given too much to do on his own. Forced a sublime save from Donnarumma on the hour mark and curled a late shot just wide.
Amad - 5
For a lot of the game, his most memorable contribution was a miskicked overhead kick. Livened up late on and could've had an assist had he not drilled a low cross so hard at the feet of Mbeumo.
Benjamin Sesko - 6
First half he forced an early save from Donnarumma and made some good runs. Barely had a touch second half.
SubstitutesHarry Maguire (Yoro 62) - 5
Poor for Haaland's second goal, with his wayward pass allowing Bernardo Silva to put Haaland in on goal.
Kobbie Mainoo (Mazrouai 62) - 6
Not involved much bar one nice counter-attack where he found Dorgu out wide.
Joshua Zirzkee (Sesko 80) - N/A
Didn't see much of the ball.
Casemiro (Ugarte 80) - N/A
Should've tapped in a wayward Bruno Fernandes shot.
