boasts a number of huge megacities home to millions of people. Johannesburg in South Africa is known as Africa's richest city, home to two billionaires and 12,000 millionaires.
Lagos, in Nigeria, is Africa's most populous megacity with over 23million people crammed into the huge metropolis. But it may surprise many to hear that another city that has been branded the "capital of Africa" over the years. and is home to 5.4 million people. Despite only being the 11th largest city in Africa, Addis Ababa has been labelled the continent's capital thanks to its historical, diplomatic, and political significance.
To this day, the city remains the base of the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
Addis Ababa is located just to the west of the East African Rift, which splits the country of Ethiopia into two parts.
The surrounding area comprises the state of Oromia.
Addis Ababa is famous in Africa for its culture, fashion scene, and political activity amongst its young population. It also has one of the fastest economies in the world.

While the city is already enjoying a boom, this will likely be accelerated thanks to the construction of a new £5 billion airport that will become the largest on the continent.
Set to be completed in 2029, the new airport will be built in the town of Bishoftu, 28 miles from Addis Ababa.
When up and running, the airport will be able to host 100 million passengers a year.
Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Mesfin Tasew, said last year: "It is a five-year project (that) will be finalised in 2029. It will be the biggest in Africa.
"Phase one alone will cost at least $6 billion... The money will come through loans and there are already companies that already showed interest."
