Lucknow: In an apparent case of one-sided love turning fatal, a 22-year-old BSc student, was shot dead by a youth from her village in Ambedkarnagar district on Friday, police said.
The accused, identified as Sandeep Yadav, a resident of Narkata Bairagipur village, was arrested by the police shortly after the incident while attempting suicide.
Police said the victim had stepped out of her house at 8pm on Friday to collect milk from a neighbourhood house when Sandeep and an accomplice-- Khushiram Maurya-- accosted her.
Sandeep shot her in the head at point-blank range with a country made pistol. The two fled on foot through nearby fields, the police said.
SHO, Hanswar, Virendra Bahadur, said following the crime, Sandeep attempted to end his life by grabbing a live transformer near Jainuddinpur Eidgah. The resulting short circuit caused him to collapse unconscious beside the transformer. Locals informed the police after spotting him. The police arrived at the spot and took him into custody.
"Due to his injuries, Sandeep has not yet been sent to jail but remains in police remand under medical care," said Bahadur.
The SHO said the Ambedkarnagar police have booked Sandeep Yadav and another local youth, Khushiram Maurya, for murder. Efforts are on to trace Maurya, he said.
The victim's elder brother's wedding was scheduled for April 30.
