Case against Kangana Ranaut dismissed

Bhopal: A special court in Jabalpur dismissed a complaint against film actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut , which sought criminal proceedings against her for her statement that the independence India got in 1947 was not real freedom but alms received from the British. An advocate in Jabalpur, Amit Sahu, filed a private complaint in the court seeking that a case be registered against her.

Sahu, in his complaint, said that in a TV interview in 2021, Kangana Ranaut described Indian freedom in 1947 as alms rather than real freedom and stated that it was in 2014 that India got real freedom. He claimed this insulted numerous freedom fighters who fought for India's freedom and every Indian at large. The special court designated to hear cases against politicians issued a notice to Ranaut seeking her response.

However, the special judge, D K Sutrakar, in his final order, dismissed the complaint, holding that it is for the individual concerned to decide when he or she starts feeling free. If somebody felt that he or she was not feeling free in India despite the country's independence in 1947, it could be his or her own personal feeling or understanding, and for this, he or she can't be sued unless he or she violates the rights of other people.
