A glowing India lights up the darkness in stunning ISS space photos from NASA

High above us, silently orbiting Earth every 90 minutes, the International Space Station ( ISS ) provides a truly magical feel as if sitting in the front-row seat of the universe. At an altitude of around 370 to 460 kilometers, this engineering marvel doesn’t just host astronauts and scientific research, it is also a cosmic window to the most breathtaking views of our planet and beyond.

From glowing auroras to city lights twinkling in the night, the ISS often shares its perspective through photos posted on social media, reminding us just how stunning Earth looks from space. These images are more than just pixels; they take us on a heavenly ride into the cosmos, through the dazzling Milky Way, where the delicate arc of Earth’s horizon, or a continent lit up like a constellation.

Recently, the ISS posted a series of night images from space, and once again the sight of the cosmos did not disappoint.

The International Space Station recently shared a series of breathtaking night photos on X (formerly Twitter), giving an out-of-this-world view of various parts of Earth as seen from orbit. One of the images, showing a radiant India lit up under a sky full of stars, has especially captivated viewers online.

Captioning the post, the ISS wrote: “When you can see the stars above, the city lights below, and the atmospheric glow blanketing Earth's horizon. Pic 1) Midwest United States Pic 2) India Pic 3) Southeast Asia Pic 4) Canada.”

Each image showcases a unique region, but it’s the shot of India that truly stands out. With clusters of bright city lights stretching across the subcontinent, the photo captures the country's densely populated area in glowing detail. Brighter hubs are visible across the northern plains, coastline, and metro areas, with dimmer regions in between — a glowing map drawn entirely in light.

The photos have gone viral online and also received numerous responses from the users, one user commented, “Simply stunning. We live on one amazing rock!” Another wrote, “We spread out like spider webs,” reflecting on the way human presence shines from space.

The other images in the series included the Midwest United States with visible cloud swirls, a peaceful view of Southeast Asia with its mix of land and water, and a spectacular shot of Canada at night dotted with lights and crowned by a vivid green aurora curling along the horizon.

Through these photos, the ISS showed us that Earth in all its nighttime splendor is truly a sight to behold.
