On April 3, 2025, Jason Clare, Minister for Education in Australia, announced the building of the first-ever Hindu school in the country. The Australian MP took to X to post, "Today we announced an $8.5m commitment to help build the first Hindu school in Australia . This investment will make the dreams of the Australian Hindu community a reality." Additionally, he announced a commitment of $2.4m to expand the work of Karma Kitchen, which helps feed homeless Australians.

The announcement for the same was made in Sydney's Harris Park, which is 45% Indian-Australian, the highest percentage for any suburb in Australia. "Hinduism is Australia's fastest growing major religion, and the Hindu community plays an important role in the multicultural country we live in today. This new school will give parents in West and North-West Sydney the option to send their children to a school that incorporates their faith and culture," said Clare while addressing the press and the gathering of Hindus.

Andrew Charlton, an MP and the chair of the Parliamentary Friends of India was also a part of the event and addressed the people saying, "This election commitment is not just about bricks and mortar: it's about giving choice to thousands of families who want their children educated in an environment that respects and reflects their cultural values."

According to the Hindu Council of Australia website, the school will be located in Oakville in North-West Sydney and will be operated by the Hindu Education and Cultural Centre. It will deliver the New South Wales curriculum along with the teachings on the culture of Hinduism, its traditions and philosophy.

As per a January 2024 report by Australia Today, Hinduism is the third-largest religion in Australia. According to the Hindu Council of Australia website, more than 680,000 Hindus reside in Australia. Thus, it is no surprise that the Albanese Labor Government has invested such a hefty amount in the community as a part of its re-election commitment.

The funding announcement is followed by a previous verbal commitment by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during Holi celebrations in March at the Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir and Cultural Precinct in Kemps Creek, where he first publicly endorsed the concept of a Hindu school. It also comes just weeks after the opposition leader, Peter Dutton, announced that they would match the same $8.5M commitment if they win the upcoming election. Dutton also announced it during a similar visit to the Swaminarayan Mandir .
