MUMBAI One of the pleasing features of the Wankhede Stadium are the stands named after cricketing greats Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar. However, there's nothing named after a woman cricketer at the iconic venue. But if a proposal regarding naming of a Wankhede North foot over bridge (FOB) after former India women's team captain Diana Edulji is passed at the Mumbai Cricket Association 's ( MCA ) Annual General Meeting on April 15, history could be partially made.

The proposal to the MCA to name the FOB connecting the Wankhede Stadium -- rebuilt in a record time of eight months at a cost of Rs 6.50 cr -- after Edulji has been made by the MCA Shafique Patel of Apollo Cricket Club and Shahalam Shaikh, a former MCA joint secretary and a representative of Stylo Cricketers.
Edulji, who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2002, took 109 wickets in 54 internationals (20 Women's Tests and 34 WODIs) with her left-arm spin.
The 69-year-old was a member of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) running the BCCI in 2018-19 and took plenty of steps to promote women’s cricket and improve facilities for the Indian women’s cricket team during her stint.
In their letter (TOI has a copy) to the MCA, Patel and Shaikh, a former MCA jt secretary, have written: "We are writing to formally propose that the railway bridge near the stadium be named in honour of Diana Edulji, one of the most distinguished figures in Indian women's cricket. Edulji's remarkable contributions to the sport, he dedicated years of service to the MCA, and her invaluable representation of India and the Railways have firmly established her as a pioneer and an inspiration for generations. Throughout her illustrious career, she has displayed unwavering dedication, breaking barriers and paving the way for countless athletes, particularly in women's cricket. Her steadfast commitment to the MCA has significantly contributed to the growth and development of the sport within the city and beyond."
"Naming the bridge in her honour would be a fitting tribute to her extraordinary achievements and the values of perseverance, leadership and excellence that she embodies. This gesture would not only recognize her legacy but also serve as an inspiration for future generations to strive for greatness. Moreover, it would reaffirm the MCA's tradition of honouring stalwarts who have made an indelible impact on the game. We sincerely request your thoughtful consideration of this proposal and look forward to your kind support in commemorating Ms Edulji's invaluable contributions."
