'No condemnation of bloodshed': BJP targets West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over Murshidabad violence

NEW DELHI: Several BJP leaders on Saturday launched sharp attack on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee after violent unrest in Jalangi, Murshidabad. A Block Development Office (BDO) was vandalised and police vehicles were set on fire during protests against the Waqf Amendment Act . The BJP questioned CM Mamata's actions and intention, saying, "she has offered no condemnation of bloodshed."

Leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Saturday strongly condemned the violence in Murshidabad district, particularly the destruction of the Jalangi BDO Office. He blamed the incident on "radical elements" and accused them of trying to undermine the Constitution and spread fear.

“I am deeply outraged and vehemently condemn the atrocious incident of vandalism at the Jalangi BDO Office in Murshidabad District, carried out by radical elements masquerading as protestors against the Anti-Waqf Law,” Adhikari wrote on social media platform X.

“Let it be known that this was not an act of protest, rather a premeditated act of violence, an assault on Democracy and Governance by Jihadist forces who seek to spread chaos in order to assert their dominance and sow fear amongst other Communities of our Society,” he added.

Over 110 people were arrested in Murshidabad district alone in connection with the violence, police said on Saturday. Raids were ongoing in Murshidabad, Malda, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly districts where protesters had torched vehicles, pelted stones at security forces, and blocked roads.

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya criticised the chief minister, writing on X: “Fresh violence erupts in parts of Malda, Murshidabad and Jangipur. Looks like chief minister Mamata Banerjee won’t instruct West Bengal police to step up till all Hindus are annihilated.”

"She has, however, offered no condemnation of the bloodshed—instead, her actions suggest that she is doing everything possible to transform West Bengal into an Islamic Caliphate. Her desperation to somehow remain in power is robbing Hindu Bengalis of their homeland," Malviya added in another post.

Union minister Giriraj Singh also slammed Mamata Banerjee, calling the violence “unfortunate” and accusing the state government of failing to protect Hindus.

“Hindus' security is the responsibility of Mamata Banerjee along with Muslims. Murshidabad violence shows Hindus are forced to flee West Bengal... It is unfortunate that this is happening in front of the state government,” Singh said while speaking to reporters in Begusarai.

BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar also took to X, blaming the unrest on Mamata Banerjee’s “minority appeasement” and vote-bank politics.

“In Mamata Banerjee's Bengal, the so-called 'messengers of peace' -- nurtured under the banner of minority appeasement -- have unleashed utter chaos. In Jalangi, Murshidabad, their fury forced the West Bengal police to retreat, vehicles were torched, and in moments, a full BDO office was reduced to rubble. Those very BDO officers, who once acted as party cadres during and after elections, now stand stunned -- facing the terrifying reality of the lawlessness they were once a part of normalizing. The state they serve offers them neither security nor dignity,” he posted.

The unrest comes after protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, which was passed in both Houses of Parliament earlier this month and received presidential assent on April 5.

The legislation aims to improve the management of waqf properties, streamline registration and legal processes, and empower stakeholders.
