'Tahawwur Rana should be hanged': Father of slain Maharashtra constable on 26/11 Mumbai attacks accused

NEW DELHI: The father of a slain Maharashtra State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) constable on Wednesday demanded capital punishment for 26/11 Mumbai attacks accused Tahawwur Rana , a Pakistani-Canadian national who is being brought to India to face trial in the case.

Subhash Shinde's son Rahul Shinde was killed in action at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in south Mumbai after it came under attack by terrorists on November 26, 2008. Rahul Shinde was among the first police personnel to enter the luxury hotel, which was among the sites targeted by Pakistani terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba group.

"So many people were killed in the deadly attack and the trauma of the attack still lingers in my mind even though more than 16 years have passed (since the incident)," Subhash Shinde told news agency PTI.

"As Rana's role has come to light in the terror attack, we should not spare him by keeping him alive in prison; he should be hanged," the 65-year-old father of the deceased constable added.

He also spoke about visualising the "terrible" images of the terrorist attacks.

"Whenever I talk about the attack, I can visualise the terrible images of the terror assault. The damage we have suffered, the loss of lives of our policemen, soldiers and citizens, cannot be forgotten," he said.

Who is Tahawwur Rana?

The 64-year-old, who was lodged at a metropolitan detention centre in Los Angeles, is known to be associated with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the 26/11 attacks.

He has exhausted all his legal options available to such subjects in the US and, according to reports, a multi-agency Indian team is in the United States to bring him to India.

The significant development comes days after Rana's last-ditch effort to stop his extradition failed as the US Supreme Court denied his application, moving him closer to being handed over to the Indian authorities to face the law in the country.

In February, US President Donald Trump announced his administration would extradite "very evil" Rana to "face justice in India." The announcement was made in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a state visit to the US.

26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks

On November 26, 2008, a group of 10 Pakistani terrorists carried out coordinated strikes on a railway station, two luxury hotels and a Jewish centre, after they sneaked into India's financial capital through the Arabian sea route.

Among the 166 persons killed were American, British and Israeli nationals. The nearly 60-hour assault sent shockwaves across the country and even brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war.

Ajmal Amir Kasab, the sole terrorist captured alive, was hanged in November 2012.
