Palestine to join Brics? Envoy submits application - what China said

Palestine has applied to join BRICS, at a time when a more and more countries have recognised it as a state in recent weeks.

Palestinian ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal confirmed the move on Friday, saying the application was still awaiting a reply.

"We have submitted an application, but, as you know, Palestine has certain conditions. I believe Palestine will participate in the association as a guest until the conditions allow it to become a full member. We haven't received a response yet," Nofal told Russian media.

BRICS, which started with Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has expanded rapidly in recent years. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates joined in 2024, followed by Indonesia in 2025.

China responded positively to the idea of further enlargement. Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing was open to welcoming “like-minded partners” into the bloc.

BRICS, he said, has become a key forum for emerging markets and developing nations, driving multi-polarity and giving a stronger voice to democracy in global affairs.

"The platform is widely recognised by Global South countries. We welcome more like-minded partners to join BRICS cooperation and jointly work for a more just and equitable international order,” Guo added.

The Palestinian bid comes as more Western nations move to recognise its statehood. Canada, Australia, Portugal and the UK all extended recognition this week.
