In a recent operation in southern Gaza, Israeli troops uncovered and destroyed a Hamas terror tunnel hidden beneath what was once a kindergarten compound in Rafah, according to the IDF.
The tunnel, just 100 metres from a school, is shown in video footage captured by Israeli troops as an example of what the army says is Hamas hiding terror sites in civilian areas.
The IDF posted a video of the tunnel on its X account, saying, "Why is the IDF still operating in Gaza? This should give you some answers."
The post highlighted the location of the shaft, saying: “During precise operational activity in Rafah, our troops located a tunnel shaft belonging to Hamas within a compound that was previously a kindergarten, and approx. 100 metres from another compound that was previously a civilian school. This is just another example of how Hamas cynically exploits the Gazan civilian population.”
The IDF further said that Hamas violates laws and exploits civilian institutions.
“Hamas systematically violates international law by cynically exploiting civilian institutions and using the population as human shields for terrorist activities," they said.
During the mission, soldiers from the Golani Brigade located a shaft that led to a booby-trapped underground passage. This tunnel extended dozens of metres underground and was connected to a larger Hamas route, as per the IDF. Combat engineers from the Yahalom unit were called in to investigate the passage before it was demolished.
The IDF concluded its statement by saying it will continue operations aimed at dismantling Hamas and its capabilities.
According to the Gaza health ministry, over 50,000 Palestinians have been killed since the October 7, 2023, invasion of Israel by Hamas.
