As northern India continues to grapple with searing heat, a fresh monsoon alert has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall across several regions in the next 48 hours. While cities such as Delhi NCR and parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh witness temperatures soaring past 40°C, relief may come in the form of scattered rain and storms in select regions.

Uttar Pradesh Braces for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

Several districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh are expected to be impacted by intense monsoon activity, with IMD issuing warnings for thunderstorms and heavy rain. Affected districts include:

  • Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Alert: Sonbhadra, Chandauli, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Mau, and Ballia

  • Rain Alert: Deoria, Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Basti

  • Moderate Rain Likely: Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Gonda

  • Isolated Rainfall Expected: Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri

Uttarakhand to See Lightning and Rain in Hill Regions

The hilly terrains of Uttarakhand are expected to see rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, primarily in:

  • Rain with Thunderstorm Alert: Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh

  • Yellow Alert: Thunderstorms and lightning expected in Dehradun

Himachal Pradesh Faces Thunderstorm and Rain Risk

Parts of Himachal Pradesh are also under watch, with stormy conditions predicted for April 18 and 19. IMD forecasts include:

  • Storm and Rain Alerts: Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Solan

  • Rain with Thunderstorm and Strong Winds: Sirmaur and Kinnaur

Northeastern States to Experience Prolonged Monsoon Disturbances

Weather conditions across the northeastern states are forecasted to worsen between April 18 and April 23, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms predicted in:

  • Severe Rain Alerts: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur

  • Heavy Showers Expected: Mizoram and Tripura

Extended Rain Forecast in Northern Hill States

Additional rainfall is expected in:

  • Himachal Pradesh on April 20

  • Uttarakhand between April 20 and 21

Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant, especially in lightning-prone and hilly regions, where landslides or flash flooding may become a risk. The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather conditions and recommends staying indoors during thunderstorms and avoiding unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.
